We manufactured 18 neon signs for Moogfest 2014. These signs were all mounted on clear acrylic and designed for wall mounting with the option to hang from ceiling. To match the colors specified by Moog, we used three different brands of glass. Tecnolux: Sky Blue, FMS Brillite: Mint Green and Voltarc: Majestic Orange for the colors. The signs were a variety of geometric shapes, the Moogfest logo and Moog logo.
The signs we made were first displayed at Rough Trade NYC Brooklyn New York. The signs were then shipped to Ashville, North Carolina for Moogfest April 23, 2014 to April 27, 2014.
The History of Moogfest: Celebrating Innovation in Music and Technology
Moogfest is an annual festival that celebrates the intersection of music, art, and technology, paying homage to the pioneering work of Dr. Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer. Since its inception, Moogfest has grown into a premier event that attracts artists, musicians, technologists, and enthusiasts from around the world.
The roots of Moogfest trace back to the early 2000s, when the Bob Moog Foundation, established in honor of Robert Moog, began organizing events to celebrate his legacy and the impact of his inventions on modern music. Robert Moog's synthesizers revolutionized the music industry by providing musicians with new ways to create and manipulate sound, influencing genres from rock to electronic music.
The first official Moogfest took place in 2004 in New York City, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Moog synthesizer. This initial event was a small, intimate gathering focused on the history and impact of Moog's work. However, its success laid the groundwork for a much larger festival that would evolve in the following years.
In 2010, Moogfest was reimagined and relaunched in Asheville, North Carolina, where the Moog Music factory is located. This marked a significant expansion of the festival, transforming it into a multi-day event featuring a diverse lineup of musical performances, workshops, panel discussions, and interactive exhibits. Asheville provided a fitting backdrop for the festival, given its connection to Robert Moog and the continued production of Moog synthesizers in the city.
The festival's programming reflected the broad influence of Moog's innovations, encompassing a wide range of genres and styles. Attendees could experience performances by electronic music pioneers, contemporary artists, and experimental musicians, all while exploring the latest developments in music technology. Workshops and panels offered insights into sound design, modular synthesis, and the future of music production, making Moogfest a hub for both inspiration and education.
In 2014, Moogfest relocated to Durham, North Carolina, a city known for its vibrant arts scene and growing tech community. This move further expanded the festival's scope, integrating more elements of technology and innovation. Durham's dynamic environment allowed Moogfest to foster greater collaboration between artists, engineers, and innovators, solidifying its reputation as a forward-thinking event at the cutting edge of music and technology.
Throughout its history, Moogfest has featured performances and presentations by a wide array of influential artists and thinkers. Notable participants have included electronic music legends like Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, and Giorgio Moroder, as well as contemporary innovators such as Grimes, Flying Lotus, and Laurie Anderson. The festival has also hosted talks and workshops by leading technologists and futurists, exploring topics like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the future of creativity.
Moogfest continues to evolve, embracing new trends and technologies while staying true to its mission of celebrating the legacy of Robert Moog and the transformative power of music and technology. The festival remains a unique gathering that attracts a diverse community of musicians, engineers, and enthusiasts, all united by their passion for innovation and creativity.
By honoring the past and looking to the future, Moogfest serves as a living tribute to Robert Moog's enduring influence on the world of music and beyond. It stands as a testament to the ways in which technology can inspire and empower artists, fostering a vibrant culture of experimentation and discovery that continues to shape the soundscapes of tomorrow.
